Some lightweight/minimalist tent designs take more than a little bit off the top to save precious pack ounces, but The North Face Vario 23 has a 48-inch high ceiling that doesn't come up short on tall backpackers and climbers. It's the tallest tent in the lightweight Flight series, and features the same freestanding, single-walled architecture shared by other tens like the Spectrums and Solo 12. Like these other tents, the Vario 23 also holds up well in gusty conditions and offers zippered overhead vents and lower mesh panels for high-low cross ventilation. It uses a single D-shaped door design, although the Vario 23 does have a rear vestibule area for sheltering extra gear that you won't need immediately after stepping out of the tent. Keep in mind that because the ceiling is higher than other Flight tents, the Vario 23 features longer poles and a slightly longer compression stuff sack (about two feet). If you're going minimalist and you insist on using a compact pack, make sure that you consider the stuff sack dimensions before you decide to hit the trail.
